An ancient Chinese acupuncture treatment to ensure a healthy, happy, and beautiful baby? Many mothers-to-be are more than willing to give this a try!
The acupuncture point used is Kidney 9 or “Zhubin”, which translates to “Guest House”.
The treatment, which has been used for centuries, consists of needling a single acupuncture point with a thin, gold needle. Gold, which is warm in nature, reinforces the functions of this special point. Located on the medial, or inner side of the lower leg, below the calf muscle, the point is stimulated gently at the end of the first and second trimesters – respectively at 14 and 26 weeks. It functions to strengthen the mother’s body, blood and qi (needed in abundance to support growth of a healthy baby), as well as jing (or prenatal essence). It is also said to clear the karma between the mother and baby, resulting in a clear pathway for beloved baby to enter the world.
Utilizing this point which lies on the Kidney meridian is selected due to its association with the Kidney organ. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Kidney is the organ responsible for governing birth, growth, reproduction, and development. It also houses the prenatal as well as postnatal essence.
Acupuncture, along with moxibustion, can help throughout pregnancy for other issues as well. These include morning sickness, nausea, fatigue, lower backache, insomnia, headaches or migraines, breech presentation, and preparation for labor. Receiving treatment during pregnancy can be a much-needed pause for relaxation for mama-to-be as well.
